Rated capacity & how it is measured

A cushion's rated lift is the maximum load at its rated working pressure. Two points matter:

  • Lift height vs capacity. As the cushion inflates, its footprint shrinks and capacity drops. Datasheets should state capacity at a reference height — compare like for like.
  • Stacking. Cushions are often stacked to reach height; total capacity is not simply additive — follow the manufacturer's stacking chart.

Working pressure & safety factor

Typical rescue cushions run around 0.8 MPa (8 bar). The safety factor — burst pressure vs working pressure — is the real safety number. Ask for the test report; a 3:1 or higher factor is a common expectation. Never exceed rated working pressure.

Material & seams

Look for aramid/Kevlar-reinforced rubber with thermally or chemically bonded seams. Heat, abrasion and repeated cycles age plain rubber faster. A visible wear layer and easy inspection points help field checks.

Hoses, control unit & manifolds

A cushion is only as good as its air system. A complete kit includes:

  • A regulated control unit / foot pump or compressor source
  • High-pressure hoses with quick couplings
  • Manifolds to inflate multiple cushions in sync
  • Pressure gauge and relief valve
